Ask around and most people will tell you cotton is the go-to for everyday bras and knickers: soft, breathable and comfy. What most people don’t know is how much water it takes to grow. It surprised us too.

 

When we looked at bringing cotton into the Nala family, it didn’t meet our standards. So we went looking for something with all of cotton’s non-negotiables and a lighter footprint. What’s actually in it

 

  • Composition: 92% modal, 8% elastane.
  • Where it comes from: The modal is made from beech trees.
  • Water: It uses less water to produce than conventional cotton.
  • How it feels: Soft, breathable and stretchy against your skin. It’s absorbent, so it feels fresh all day.

 

Why we called it Better Than Cotton

 

We had two things in mind: how it feels when you wear it, and what it means for the planet.

How it feels

 

  • It’s softer than run-of-the-mill cotton. You’ll see what we mean the second you touch it.
  • It’s breathable and absorbent, so it stays comfy from morning to night.
  • It has a bit of stretch, so it moves with you instead of bagging out.

 

How it’s better for the planet

 

  • Modal from beech trees uses less water to produce than conventional cotton.
  • It’s made to hold up wash after wash, so you’re not replacing your basics as often.

We’re not going to pretend it’s perfect. The elastane that gives it stretch is synthetic, but the fabric is a genuine step up from conventional cotton, and we can explain exactly why.
