When should you buy a maternity bra?
According to the Australian Breastfeeding Association, your boobs will mostly be done changing and growing at 16 weeks. That said, some people may outgrow their favourite bras long before the four month mark, so it really depends on how your body is responding to the hormone cocktail that comes with pregnancy. Use our measurement guide to find out your new size, and remember, don’t buy a bra that is too big or too small. If your girls grow more later on, you can always upgrade. If you need a target amount, start with two and reassess just before your little person arrives.
How do you know what size maternity bra to buy?
Fitting a maternity bra isn’t all about size (although the correct cup and band size matter) - it should also feel freaking awesome. Your breasts should be embraced comfortably and evenly, with a little bit of give in the band to respond to post-let down fluctuations. Be careful the back isn’t riding up - before you rip the tags off, try your bra over an existing crop with nursing pads to catch any liquid gold and maintain your ability to get a refund. If the back is crawling up to your shoulder blades, it’s time to go up a cup size.
Why should I buy a wirefree maternity bralette?
Underwire isn’t great when you’re breastfeeding. Breastfeeding causes your boobs to gain and lose volume throughout the day, as bub lunches and the supply is replenished. The rigid, and often unforgiving nature of underwire can put too much pressure on your girls when they’re full, increasing the likelihood of mastitis. And mastitis is no joke!
