It’s all in the cup. A t-shirt bra has a smooth, seam-free cup that keeps a clean outline under thin or fitted fabric. Some use moulded foam, while unpadded styles use smooth, double-layered fabric. No stitching pressing through, no lace edge reading as a ridge under a plain tee.

How to stop a t-shirt bra showing under clothes

A few things do most of the work.

• Match the bra to your skin, not the top. A bra that blends into your skin tone disappears under everything.

• Under white, go nude. A white bra under a white top shows more than a skin-tone one. Every time. Prefer a set colour? Shop our white bras and nude bras.

• Skip lace and contrast seams when the top is thin or fitted. Save those for looser layers.

• Check the top of the cup in the mirror. See a ridge or a dent? The cup size is off, not the bra.

• No gape. Gaping reads as a hollow dent under fabric, which is the exact thing you're trying to avoid.

Getting the fit right (and fixing top-of-cup gape)

Top-of-cup gape usually means the cup is too large or the cup shape does not suit your breast shape. If the band already fits, try a smaller cup in the same band or a shallower cup shape.

Sister sizing is useful when the band also needs to change. Go up a band and down a cup, or down a band and up a cup, to keep roughly the same cup volume. If the band rides up, try a smaller band and move up a cup to preserve the cup volume.

T-shirt bras for a bigger bust

Selected styles run through to an H cup, so a smooth everyday bra at DD+ is very doable. 

Underwire usually wins for lift and separation at bigger cups. A well-fitted wire takes weight off the straps and holds shape under a fitted top. Wire-free t-shirt bras absolutely work at bigger cups too, especially with wider straps and a fuller cup. Just expect a softer, more natural silhouette rather than a lifted one.

Padded or unpadded, which is better?

Neither is better. It depends on what you want under the top. Padded gives nipple coverage and a bit of extra shape. Unpadded keeps things smooth with your natural shape. Plenty of customers own both and pick based on the outfit.

Can a wire-free bra be a t-shirt bra?

Yes. A t-shirt bra is defined by its smooth finish under clothes, not by whether it has a wire. Wire-free t-shirt bras give you the invisible outline without the poke, which is why they're a favourite for all-day wear. Support comes from the cup shape, band and straps working together.

How should a t-shirt bra fit?

The cup should sit flat against your boob with no gape at the top and no spillage. The band should sit level across your back, not ride up. Straps should stay put without digging. If the band fits but the top of the cup dents inward, try a smaller cup in the same band or a shallower cup shape.
